A Visit to Charm City Cakes and The Diz
My friend Al and I went to lunch at The Diz.  It’s a wonderful little restaurant across the street from Duff Goldman’s Charm City Cakes.  The Diz has the very best chicken wings seasoned with Old Bay in the entire universe. After lunch we walked across the street and took a few pictures at Charm City Cakes.  I thought you’d enjoy them.  The worker you see exiting used to be...

Rubber Duckies
Rubber duckies aren’t just for kids.  Why sit in the bath tub with nothing to do?  Rubber duckie, you’re the one.  Two.  Three.  Four!

The Drunken Mug
Here’s an interesting little curiosity.  I found it at a flea market.  One side of the mug is a guy with one set of eyes.  And, on the other side he’s got two sets of eyes.  What brilliant, stoned guy thought of this?  Were there a lot of these mugs made?  Did people actually buy and use these?  Maybe, when you felt drunk, you turned the mug around?  But, if you were drunk, would you...

Jack Perrin
I’d like to introduce you to Jack Perrin, artist extraordinaire.  First, he created the performance piece above, imitating my “Mmmmm Grapes!” pastel painting.  Then he drew the remarkable, “When I Grow Up I Want to Be an Artist.”  Jack depicts himself in the center of the page and the only bit of color is his easel, illustrating a sophistication quite remarkable for...

An Obsession With Food
I’m obsessed with food.  You can tell that from the pictures above.  I paint characters eating.  I serve cupcakes with faces on them to cartoonists.  I take a picture of the hotdog I’m served at the ballpark. When my brother and I were young my mother often made us breakfast.  She took a glazed donut, cut it in half, smeared butter on both sides and toasted it.  I remember taking a...

My Old Magnolia Tree
My cousin, John, who still lives in Louisville, Kentucky (where I grew up) just sent me this email: Barby, I noticed your posting on facebook about the magnolia tree at your old, old, old house.  I was over there the other day (we’re putting our house up finally).  Look at your tree now. John When I saw this picture I almost burst into tears.  I haven’t seen this tree, or this house, in...

Reddy Kilowatt
*** “It’s too simple, I said.  I didn’t know then it was simple, but eloquent.” (Carl Reiner in, “The 2000 Year Old Man” about the invention of the cross.) *** It’s not very often that I run across something that is absolutely perfect.  It never happens in complicated genres like books and movies.  They’re too much, too long, too complicated to...

Sandwiches
The Cold Brown.  They served it at The Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky.  It’s a slice of toast.  Then lettuce, cold turkey breast, chopped egg, and bacon.  Smother the entire thing in Thousand Island dressing.  Live happy. Meanwhile, check out the sandwich below.  It’s a perfect example of beauty over function.  I love it!

Baltimore's Most Beautiful Dog Contest
Okay, I entered both my dogs in the Baltimore’s Most Beautiful Dog Contest.  I haven’t heard anything and it’s been a really long time.  So, I think they lost.  But, don’t tell them.  They’re very sensitive. It’s just as well.  I didn’t want one to win over the other.  It would have been hell around here. So, aren’t these the most beautiful dogs in...

Al Hirschfeld
Oh, how I always wanted to own a piece by the great artist, Al Hirschfeld, master of the elegant line! I figured I had an extremely limited window of opportunity to afford an original by him.  It would have to be before he died, or the prices would skyrocket.  This was in the early 1990s’, when Al was already in his late eighties.  It turned out I had more time than I thought.  Al...

Thaddea's House in France
My friend Thaddea is an artist.  Her particular craft is creating beauty wherever she lives.  For the past decade she’s lived in Souvigny, a little village near Moulins, which is NW of Lyon and SW of Dijon, France.  Before that she lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Thaddea’s friend Mona brought her friend Nancy Grayson to Thaddea’s bouquetterie.  Nancy takes great pictures. ...

Magnolias
When I was growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, there was a huge, magnificent magnolia tree in our front yard.  I’ve never forgotten it.  The satiny smooth white blossoms, the heady, intoxicating smell, the fuzzy brown undersides of its leaves… A few years ago I was walking in downtown DC with my brother, John.  We passed magnolia after magnolia after magnolia in front of the white...

A Blogger...
Oh my God, I’m a blogger!  Since I refuse to be a jogger, why not a blogger? What do bloggers do?  I think they do stuff like post links.  So, here goes…http://DaleCards.com.  Go to Stuff for Sale.  Click on the CafePress store and you’ll find dirty cards.  Cards that stores are afraid to stock because they make jokes about penises and oral sex and constipation. Okay,...
